DISABILITY CONCERNS FOR

FUMC OF BURLESON

03/2007

What is a disability?

Disabilities come in many forms.  Most people think of disabilities as being confined to a wheelchair but this is only one of many.  Below are listed the many kinds of disabled “labels” that we propose we address.

          A. Mobility Impairments

1. Wheelchair bound

2. Crutch or Cane needed

3. Wrapped limb or Cast

B. Hearing Impairments

          1. Deaf

          2. Reads lips

          3. Reads Braille

          4. Sign language

C. Visual Impairments

          1. Wears glasses

          2. Wears contacts

          3. Blind

D.      Speech Impairments

E.      Developmental Disabilities

F.      Hidden Disabilities

          1. Depression

          2. Mental Health

          3. Dementia

Some of the above concerns have already been addressed at our Church.  These are for instance:  the Visual and Hearing Impairments improvements, the Handicap ramp, Handicap parking spaces in our parking lot and larger spaces under the sinks in our kitchen for wheelchair accessibility.  We are farther along than some, but still have a way to go.
